Carl Sagan teaching school children about the Universe

This comes from Carl Sagan’s Cosmos episode 7, “The Backbone of Night.” Carl Sagan teaches children, at his former elementary school, about the Universe and our place within it. Near the end of this clip, is yet another of Carl Sagan’s most profound messages: “There are in fact 100 billion galaxies, each of which contain something like a 100 billion stars….We find that we live on an insignificant planet, of a humdrum star, lost in a galaxy, tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe, in which there are far more galaxies than people.”

How fortunate these kids were have the great Carl Segan teaching them…

I would kill whoever talked back to him.

I wish all science teachers were like Carl!

    I totally agree …
I totally agree Kujien, kids nowadays wouldnt really give a shit, but can you imagine having the honour of meeting Carl Sagan. But I suppose its a bit late for me to say that now. RIP carl.

  6. AradynnNyzon says:

    i totally …
i totally understand what you’re saying, if i were in such a classroom i would stand up and defend him, this guy is my hero. this man has inspired me to learn and make a career of the nature of the cosmos, i have yet to decide what discipline, but it will definitely be astro/theoretical physics, particle physics etc… it would have been the highest honour to have sat in that classroom the day he gave that lesson, i would have decided to be a cosmologist or astronaut that day =)

  7. klonedklein says:

    You should be open …
You should be open to panpsychism and quantum consciousness, not only in humans, but all atomic and subatomic ‘matter’.

Humans will not discover any more than humans are capable of; therefore, IMO, it will take many millions of years after war and profit rule the earth, before mankind, humans, will ever have time to look within, as well as without.

Science as we know it, stripped of all ‘mysteries’ is relatively new, and ridiculous at best. I know from experience things that won’t be believed

  8. Geneticist, and …
Geneticist, and many many other sciences that I wish to learn about. Well I guess I still have 2 years to figure that out but I will definitely become a scientist and hopefully help this world or at least add knowledge to the ever expanding knowledge of our humble world

  9. Wow the classroom …
Wow the classroom has changed since back then nowadays if somebody like Carl came into our class there would be people yelling and saying “mothafucka who gives a about this stupid shit, and walk out of the class”. Of course I would have not been one of them I could only dream to be taught by Carl. Hopefully in that class he inspired some future cosmologists are other scientists. Like I have been inspired by him and other things to become either a PaleoAnthropologist/Biologist/Paleontologist

  10. How do you read him …
How do you read him? jk :P

  11. Donatello2030 says:

    i say 50 year or …
i say 50 year or more, :) It is due to the fact that so few people, have any grip at all on even something so basic as simple statistics, that issues like evolution and ‘global warming’ are so poorly understood. Being unable to muster the tools necessary to think for themselves, people has to choose among the opinions of various Authorities,it’s quite likely that the will fall to the person to whom you are more sympathetic, such as a Preacher or mullah, rather than a Scientist, like Carl Segan.

  12. When i have a kid …
When i have a kid im going to encourage them to watch the cosmos series.

  13. I know, oh I would …
I know, oh I would have LOVED IT!
I started reading him when I was 11, he made it so easy

  14. HolyFungus says:

If there was ever a …
If there was ever a man who deserved to come briefly back to life at 5 year intervals to see what’s been learned in that time, it’s Carl Sagan.

  15. the9milethug says:

    Dr. Sagan
    The man …

    Dr. Sagan
The man deserves to be called doctor.

  16. the9milethug says:

How amazing would it have been to have been taught by Mr. Sagan! Wow :) !

  18. If we can actually …
If we can actually get a picture of another planet like that it would be one of the most important pictures of all time.

  19. utubeworms says:

    Wow, these kids …
Wow, these kids don’t know how privileged they were to have been taught a class by Mr. Sagan.

  20. I wish Mr. Sagan …
I wish Mr. Sagan would still be there today, I don’t know what I’d give to hear him, his comfort voice, express new thoughts about the discoveries we’ve made after his death until this day. I wish I could see him react to the Mars exploration program for example, or the seemingly unstoppable findings of extra-solar planets… we miss you Mr. Sagan.

I’ve made a Memoriam of him, if you guys want to see it, see my profile, and leave comments.

  21. bananasamichz says:

    That class was very …
That class was very lucky to have such a wonderful educator teaching them about the universe.

  22. I had no idea …
I had no idea planetary detection methods were being thought about so far back in the early 80’s. the actual successful methods we started using in ‘95 are only slightly different than what he’s describing.

  23. rogerpenna says:

    we know hundreds of …
we know hundreds of extra-solar planets, just as he predicted… but all of them we know by the undirect method.

we still cant see them by the other method (blocking the light of stars to see the planet). Thats very sad.

But yes, there are projects for space telescopes which would have systems to block the light of stars and see the planets.

  24. JustyHakubi says:

    He was truly a …
He was truly a great spokesman for astronomy and science. His show Cosmos really got me interested back when I was child. There really needs to be another contemporary show about astronomy hosted by someone with the passion of Sagan.

  25. ManifestMiasma says:

    I see how patient …
I see how patient he is, how clearly he relates such complex sciences as stellar spectroscopy or extrasolar planet detection to the minds of children, and I see what a wonderful educator – not just scientist – he was. There are plenty of teachers like him though, but we need more. You can’t help but be impassioned by studying the universe.

  26. This blog Is very informative , I am really pleased to post my comment on this blog . It helped me with ocean of knowledge so I really belive you will do much better in the future . Good job web master .
